This triptych depicts a battle scene from the Genpei War: Minamoto no Yoritomo, mounted on his horse and clad in imposing armour,
confronts the Taira clan soldiers with ferocity and courage.
The scene refers to the Battle of Ishibashiyama (石橋山の戦い) in 1180, one of the first clashes of the conflict. Although Yoritomo initially suffered
a defeat, the episode is remembered as the beginning of his rise and a symbol of his resilience.
As the third son of Yoshitomo, Yoritomo had been exiled in his youth following the Heiji Rebellion. He later rose against the Taira with determination,
setting in motion the events that would lead to the foundation of the Kamakura shogunate.
Good colours with scattered pigment splashes. Restored on reverse, some edge wear and surface stains, but overall structurally preserved.
