Hanafusa Hideki

1913 or 1914 ~ probably 2001

Hideki Hanafusa (Hanabusa Hideki) was a Japanese woodblock print artist best known for his depictions of traditional Japanese performing arts, particularly Noh theatre and Bunraku puppet drama. His prints are characterized by a refined sense of atmosphere, careful attention to costume and gesture, and a deep appreciation for the aesthetic traditions of Japanese stage performance.
Working in a period when traditional woodblock printing coexisted with modern artistic movements, Hanafusa developed a distinctive style that combined technical precision with a quiet, contemplative mood. His works often focus on iconic theatrical characters and scenes, capturing both their visual elegance and emotional depth.
Although relatively little biographical information has been published about his life and career, his prints remain appreciated by collectors of modern Japanese woodblock prints and by enthusiasts of Japan`s classical performing arts. Through his work, Hanafusa contributed to preserving and celebrating the visual heritage of Noh and Bunraku for contemporary audiences.
